Sovereign wealth funds collectively manage money that’s already in the vicinity of $15 trillion. In this IMF chart, using the Global SWF assets-under-management definition, the figure for 2025 is labeled $15.82 trillion.

The window runs from 1980 to 2025, and the unit is trillions of dollars. These are assets managed in total by sovereign wealth funds—not the net asset value of any single fund, nor the foreign exchange reserves held by central banks. In an IMF blog posted on July 21, the current scale was written as more than $16 trillion; for 2008 it was about $3 trillion. Those figures are in the same ballpark direction as the $15.82 shown in the chart. Meanwhile, on the other side, an IE University and ICEX report for 2026, based on statistics through April, counted 109 funds totaling $15.1 trillion; the previous version listed 104 funds and $13.2 trillion. The two lists don’t line up, and differences in the placement of decimals are normal.
