Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake posted a single line on X today: "Goodbye, Poseidon!" Eight years and eight-digit figures worth of research have come to an end at this moment.
The Ethereum Foundation has announced that it is abandoning the use of the Poseidon hash function in the L1 roadmap and is moving to traditional solutions like SHA or BLAKE.
Why it’s worth clarifying:
Poseidon is a “SNARK-friendly” hash function designed specifically for zero-knowledge proofs. Since its birth in 2019, it has become the mainstream choice in zkRollups and zkVMs, safeguarding the security of tens of billions of dollars’ worth of on-chain assets. So why abandon it now?
Because the design of SNARKs themselves has advanced. Researchers found that when doing mathematical computation in the “binary field,” the performance of traditional hash functions like SHA-2 and BLAKE2s can already match Poseidon—no special hash is needed, only a better proof-system design. “Looking back, the key isn’t the SNARK-friendly hash, but the hash-friendly SNARK.”
This decision only concerns the future architecture of Ethereum L1. It does not immediately remove Poseidon from existing applications—zkRollups and zkVMs that already use Poseidon do not need to replace it.
Roadmap: complete a production-grade leanVM in 2027, then progressively deploy it across Ethereum’s consensus layer, data layer, and execution layer in 2028.
As for ETH’s price today: this is a signal of long-term technical health, not a price catalyst for today. But it shows how Ethereum gets things done—8 years of research, finding a better path, pivoting decisively, and not lingering with sunk costs.
