My uncle is an elderly man with a very high emotional intelligence.
My uncle is a retired teacher. He receives more than 7,000 yuan in retirement pay every month. His son drives a taxi, and his daughter-in-law goes out to work, but they don’t really have much money.
During the pandemic a few years ago, the son and daughter-in-law were home every day with nothing to do and had no income at all. Meanwhile, my uncle had his 7,000-plus yuan retirement pension each month. He would give his daughter-in-law 4,000 yuan a month for living expenses, helping the couple get through the hard times.
Later, when the pandemic ended, the son and daughter-in-law went back to work and could earn money again.
This year, after the daughter-in-law resigned, she couldn’t find a job for nearly two to three months. She stayed at home to take care of the children, do housework, and then my uncle gave her 10,000 yuan. He said that these months of taking care of the children at home were hard work for her two in-laws, and he gave her 10,000 yuan so she could spend it as she pleased.
The daughter-in-law was extremely happy. Every day she cooked creatively and came up with different meals for my uncle, taking very good care of him.
My uncle often, during the most difficult times for his daughter-in-law, would give her money every few days—never too much and never too little. The timing was just right, and the money amount was just right too.
A few days ago, the son and daughter-in-law said they wanted to buy a car. The total cost was 180,000 yuan, and they were still short by 80,000 yuan. My uncle directly transferred 100,000 yuan to his daughter-in-law. She was very grateful.
My aunt complained that my uncle was being too impulsive in giving money.
But my uncle said, “My money is bound to be for my son and daughter-in-law sooner or later. After I’m gone, I can’t take it into the coffin. Whether I give it sooner or later doesn’t matter—but it’s better to give it earlier so it can make your daughter-in-law happy too. And she’ll also take good care of me.”
Do you think my uncle is right?
Do you have an elder like this around you?
