China News Service, August 13—In the evening of August 13, Beijing time, the three major U.S. stock indexes opened higher. The S&P 500 rose 0.22%, the Dow Jones gained 0.23%, and the Nasdaq rose 0.12%.
In large-cap tech stocks, Meta rose 1.07%. Among Chinese concept stocks, Trip.com fell 1.25%, Alibaba declined 1.33%, XPeng Group dropped 1.36%, Li Auto fell 1.36%, NIO slipped 1.43%, NetEase fell 1.73%, JD.com declined 1.82%, and Bilibili fell 2.78%. Dell Technologies rose more than 3%; SK hynix was slightly green; SpaceX fell by nearly 2%.
In commodities, international oil prices fell, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) and Brent crude dropping by more than 2%. Precious metals also declined, with spot gold falling below $4,400.
On the news front, the latest released data shows that the United States’ Producer Price Index (PPI) in July rose 4.7% year on year, compared with an expected 4.9%, and the prior reading of 5.5%; it was unchanged month on month, with an expected increase of 0.2%. The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits for the first time last week was 209,000, versus an estimate of 202,000, and a prior figure of 199,000.
Also, according to Iranian media reporting on the 13th, the spokesperson for the Central Headquarters of Iran’s Armed Forces, Hatem al-Anbia, said that without permission from Iran, no vessels can pass through the Strait of Hormuz safely.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said in a social media post today, “The United States has long misjudged due to intelligence failures.” He added that the war against Iran is “a typical case,” and that the United States now has “a greater misjudgment” regarding the issue of the Strait of Hormuz.
