Crypto giants collectively call out: “Return the AI weapons to us”
Coinbase, Block, BitGo, and dozens of other crypto companies jointly wrote to the AI Lab, demanding the release of security tools that attackers have been using all along. The rationale is simple: the guardrails are too strict right now—white-hat researchers can’t do their work, while hackers face no barriers.
This letter punctures a surreal reality. The same AI tool can be used by hackers to write phishing code with impunity—no one cares. But when security researchers use it to find vulnerabilities, they’re met with all kinds of restrictions, as if their hands are tied.
Bad actors act without restraint. Good people are constrained by rules. How is this protecting security? This is a one-sided “sending heads” to the hackers.
AI must be protected against misuse, but preventing misuse doesn’t mean disarming the defense side. Vulnerabilities don’t disappear just because the tools are restricted—they only get buried deeper, waiting for attackers to find them one by one.
Instead of leaving good people empty-handed, why not give them better equipment? In the arms race between offense and defense, whoever gets the key first takes the initiative.
Behind this letter lies the collective anxiety of dozens of companies about the current state of security. The crypto industry has been targeted by hackers for too long. Relying solely on headcount-driven manual audits can’t keep up with the pace of AI-powered attacks.
If this drags on, there will be more and more vulnerabilities, and the money in wallets will only become more and more precarious.
At the end of the day, technology is neutral—the key is who holds it. Tying up good people only makes bad actors more arrogant.
