On the day, the gain in South Korea’s composite index widened to 5%. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix both rose more than 8%. Earlier that day, South Korea’s exchanges, after the KOSPI 200 index futures rose 5%, activated the KOSPI temporary trading halt mechanism and paused automated buying for 5 minutes.
Overnight, after widespread declines on August 10, U.S. chip stocks rebounded. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 0.87%, Cohu Semiconductor rose more than 4%, Teradyne rose more than 3%, ASML rose more than 3%, MKS Instruments rose more than 1%, Lam Research rose more than 1%, and Broadcom fell more than 1%.
On August 11, at KeyBanc Capital Markets’ annual Technology Leadership Forum, Sumeet Sadana, Executive Vice President and Chief Business Officer of Micron Technology, said that, as the AI wave continues to drive demand higher while the industry’s capacity expansion pace struggles to keep up, the tight supply situation in the memory chip market is expected to persist beyond 2027.
Sadana revealed that since Micron Technology’s latest earnings report was released, customer demand signals have strengthened further. The company expects that the supply-demand balance for the 2027 calendar year “will be even tighter than 2026,” and it is still not possible to determine when industry supply will be able to match demand.
Sadana said that for customers, the “primary constraint” lies in DRAM itself rather than power supply, real estate, data center capacity, or logic wafers. He attributed part of the cause of the supply-demand imbalance to the difficulty and long cycle involved in building advanced memory manufacturing plants and ramping up production capacity.
