Fed rate-hike disagreement deepened, rooted in a collision between "inflation persistence" and a "vague policy framework." At the July FOMC meeting, the Fed kept its target range at 3.50%–3.75%, but it produced a rare 9–3 vote split—three regional Fed presidents, Hamack, Kashkari, and Logan, publicly argued for a 25bp hike, the largest dissent since 2016. The crux of the disagreement centered on whether an energy supply shock would translate into sustained inflation risk, on top of Wosh (Kevin Warsh) voluntarily cancelling forward guidance and refusing to provide a rate path. The market was forced to price uncertainty on its own, and the uncertainty premium surged.

In the short term, the high-rate environment directly weighs on high-valuation tech stocks. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index plunged 5.33% on the day of the policy decision. Among them, Micron Technology (MU 📉) (short now, long later 📈)—though the storage cycle is boosted by AI demand, rising rate-hike expectations combined with weakening earnings guidance created clear near-term pressure. Nvidia (NVDA 📉) (short now, long later 📈) and Microsoft (MSFT 📉) (short now, long later 📈) are also sensitive to long-end U.S. Treasury yields. The 10-year yield pushed above 5.2%, hitting a new high since 2007, pressuring discounted cash-flow models for forward cash flows.

📈 From a long-term perspective, however, there is still a hint of warmth: on one hand, after a surprising cold miss in August’s nonfarm payrolls, traders have already cut their rate-hike expectations, with the probability of a September hike falling from 55% to 40.1%; on the other hand, over the past four quarters, AI compute-capex investment growth has been close to 20%, providing an earnings support base for core names such as NVDA and MSFT. If August–September inflation data confirms a cooling trend and Warsh delivers a more reassuring signal at Jackson Hole, tech stocks could see valuation repairs.

The trajectory of geopolitical developments between Iran and the U.S., August CPI and nonfarm data, and Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech at the end of August. Any of these exceeding expectations could extend the "short" position and delay the "long" call. #美联储加息分歧加深
