A drifting SpaceX rocket speeds toward the Moon
It is expected to crash into the surface of the natural satellite on Wednesday.

It is estimated that the rocket’s impact will generate a crater nearly 27 meters in diameter and 5 meters deep on the lunar surface.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida. A drifting SpaceX rocket is headed for the Moon after launching two lunar modules more than a year ago.

The rocket’s upper stage will accidentally impact the Moon on Wednesday, creating a crater and kicking up a cloud of dust and debris that scientists and astronomers are eager to observe.

Space tracking expert Bill Gray predicts an impact at 8,700 km/h (seven times the speed of sound) near the Einstein crater, in the western margin illuminated by the Sun. Since the event will unfold in the early morning hours, eastern areas of the United States and Canada, as well as much of South America, will have the best views.
