The #Ethereum update named "Dencun" has been deployed on the second of three total testnets, with only one week left until its launch on the final testnet, Holesky, scheduled for February 7th. Subsequently, developers will set a date for Dencun's activation on the main Ethereum network.

This significant step in Ethereum's development, the largest since the beginning of 2023, brings the "Dencun" project and its key feature, "proto-danksharding," closer to fruition. Proto-danksharding aims to reduce transaction costs on second-layer blockchains and make data more affordable through a new type of data storage known as "blobs." With the rapidly increasing number of second-layer chains on the Ethereum platform, this update is considered fundamental to supporting further ecosystem growth.

The update on the Sepolia testnet was executed on Thursday from 22:51 UTC to 23:10 UTC.

Key Features of the Dencun Update

Sepolia is the second testnet that has simulated the deployment of Dencun. Earlier in the month, Dencun was launched on the Goerli testnet but initially faced completion challenges.

The launch of Dencun on Ethereum's last testnet, Holesky, is expected on February 7th, which will lead to determining the date of its activation on the main #blockchain .

Testnets replicate the main blockchain and allow developers to test any changes to the protocol or its decentralized applications in a low-stakes environment.

Dencun, originally scheduled for the end of 2023, represents the most significant update for Ethereum since last March's Shapella upgrade, which enabled the withdrawal of staked ether (ETH).
