I’ve been thinking about a highly counterintuitive phenomenon: as the largest asset pool in the crypto world (1.8 trillion USD), Bitcoin’s capital efficiency in its native DeFi space is extremely low, with penetration even below 1%.

Past solutions, in essence, have all been doing “concept substitution.” Whether it’s wrapping BTC into derivative tokens or mapping it through cross-chain bridges, users are effectively forced into a risk profile with extreme asymmetry—betting on the security of their assets in order to trust the technical ethics of the custodian. They claim to be releasing liquidity, but at the core it’s still the same centralized model.

What truly prompted me to put Babylon under close observation is its attempt to fundamentally rework the asset-collateral paradigm.

In the TBV architecture, what attracts me most is “assets stay put, proofs lead first.” It cleverly leverages BitVM3 to embed constraints into Bitcoin’s native scripting layer, and then transmits the state out to the surrounding network using the ZK cryptographic proofs generated by BABE. It’s like putting a home up for collateral—you don’t need to physically move the house to the bank; you only need an unforgeable deed transfer proof to complete credit underwriting. It compresses the previous “human blind trust” in multi-sig committees and custodians directly into unconditional trust in pure mathematical logic.

But from a risk-control perspective, I currently still keep a small position for experimentation, never going heavy.

Cryptography being airtight doesn’t automatically mean the execution chain is absolutely secure. When extreme market conditions arrive, the ZK proofs can be generated precisely at the required time point, but once a downstream L2’s sequencer experiences even a brief congestion or reordering, the time difference of just a few seconds can be enough to completely break the liquidation logic. In financial markets, time is the biggest variable. MEV bots lying in wait are exceptionally good at exploiting this kind of micro-level physical latency for arbitrage and surgical takedowns. It’s like buying a top-tier armored vehicle with state-of-the-art protection, only to get hit by stray armor-piercing debris from a roadside due to a traffic jam at the toll booth—highly ironic, yet it happens every day.

As long as the time gap for cross-chain finality is not perfectly smoothed out, the DeFi “financialization” of BTC will always hang over with a Damocles’ sword. Do people truly believe that future iterations of Rollup technology can completely cure these kinds of micro-frictions?
