Shell’s giant company expects strong growth in the LNG market
Shell expects global demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) to rise to around 700 million tons per year by 2050, an increase of about 65% compared with 2025, as countries move to strengthen energy security and ensure more flexible and reliable supplies. This comes despite recent disruptions in energy markets caused by shipping disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting the continued growing role of LNG in meeting global energy needs.

Shell, headquartered in London, said total LNG trade reached 422 million tons in 2025, with expectations for an increase during 2026. However, shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, which coincided with the outbreak of the war with Iran, led to a disruption of about one-fifth of global monthly LNG supply. This has created temporary pressure on the movement of trade and supplies.
