The U.S. Attorney's Office has recommended that a minimum sentence of 17 years in prison is "fair and appropriate" for a lawyer accused of laundering money through the OneCoin crypto scheme.
In a Jan. 19 filing in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, U.S. Attorney Damian Williams recommended a prison sentence of “at least 17 years” for attorney Mark Scott, who is accused of laundering millions of dollars through OneCoin. According to prosecutors, Scott went into laundering funds "full-time" for 'Crypto Queen' Ruja Ignatova, who founded OneCoin with Karl Sebastian Greenwood in 2014.
It was stated that Scott's sentence should be appropriate to the seriousness of the crime he committed. Prosecutors said Scott knew OneCoin was a fraud scheme, but "consistently and regularly denied and falsified documents" regarding the firm and his connection to Ignatova. It was stated that based on Scott's "disgusting" behavior, a prison sentence of at least 17 years was an appropriate deterrent.
In November 2019, the OneCoin lawyer was found guilty of involvement in attempted bank fraud and money laundering charges. According to the U.S. Attorney, Scott's legal team recommended a 5-year prison sentence.
In September 2023, Greenwood was sentenced to 20 years in prison on fraud and money laundering charges and was ordered to pay $300 million in damages to OneCoin victims. OneCoin's former chief compliance officer, Irinia Dilkinska, pleaded guilty to two felony charges in November 2023, with sentencing scheduled for February.
Ignatova is still at large and is on the FBI's Most Wanted List.
