SUMMARY
PancakeSwap is a decentralized exchange (DEX) available on multiple blockchain networks.
It uses an Automated Market Maker (AMM) model, which means that trades are made through liquidity pools rather than using traditional order books.
PancakeSwap offers a wide variety of products and features such as token swaps, liquidity pools, yield farming, Limit orders, NFTs, Web3 games, and much more.
Introduction
The decentralized finance (DeFi) revolution has redefined the way we operate and invest. With the use of blockchain technology, DeFi platforms can offer greater transparency, autonomy, and accessibility to financial services.
In the early years of DeFi protocols, we witnessed the emergence of numerous decentralized platforms and exchanges (DEX). They initially focused on the Ethereum blockchain because of its smart contract capabilities. However, we now have several DeFi platforms on various networks, such as BNB Chain, Polygon, Solana, and many others.
As smart contract-enabled blockchains, these networks have a growing community of users, developers, and tools to create powerful decentralized applications (dApps). In this article, we will discuss PancakeSwap, a multi-chain decentralized exchange.
What is PancakeSwap?
PancakeSwap is a decentralized exchange (DEX) launched in 2020. Initially, it was primarily used for swapping BEP-20 tokens on BNB Smart Chain (BSC), but has since expanded to other chains.
Currently, PancakeSwap also supports ERC-20 and other token standards. In addition to BSC, you can use PancakeSwap on other blockchains, such as Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, and many others.
El exchange PancakeSwap
PancakeSwap uses an Automated Market Maker, AMM (automatic market maker) model. This means that you can trade digital assets on the platform without depending on a centralized exchange. There is no order book that matches your order with someone else's. Instead, you trade against a liquidity pool.
These pools are filled with the funds of other users. They deposit them in the pool and receive liquidity provider (LP) tokens in exchange. They can use those tokens to claim their stake, plus a portion of the trading fees. In short, you can trade tokens or add liquidity to earn rewards.
PancakeSwap V3
Notably, PancakeSwap V3 was launched in April 2023 and brings new features and product updates, including non-fungible liquidity positions, customizable price ranges, increased liquidity, and greater trading efficiency.
Let's look at some of the main features of the PancakeSwap exchange.
PancakeSwap Key Features
Liquidity pools
PancakeSwap liquidity pools play a crucial role in facilitating token swaps. Users can contribute liquidity to these pools and earn LP tokens in return, which not only represent their share of the pool, but also grant them rewards in the form of trading fees.
Yield farming allows liquidity providers to earn additional rewards, such as CAKE tokens, by locking their LP tokens in smart contracts. The introduction of Initial Farm Offerings (IFO) offers users the opportunity to purchase new tokens during limited-time events.
Swaps de tokens y Smart Router
Token swaps on PancakeSwap are optimized with Smart Router, which intelligently routes trades through various liquidity sources such as PancakeSwap V3, V2, StableSwap, and market makers on both BNB Smart Chain and Ethereum.
Users can customize their trades, choose liquidity sources, and adjust their routing preferences. Smart Router ensures optimal trade execution by finding the best prices across multiple pools.
Limit Orders for desired prices
The introduction of Limit orders by PancakeSwap allows users to have more control over their trades. Users can set desired prices to buy or sell tokens when the market reaches a specific limit price or higher price.
Integration with market makers
PancakeSwap's integration with Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain market makers improves trading efficiency. This means that trades can be automatically routed to market makers and offer better execution prices compared to AMM. This integration aims to offer users profitable trading options and improved liquidity.
Zap function
Traditionally, users who want to provide liquidity to DeFi platforms must add a pair of tokens to the liquidity pool. On PancakeSwap, the Zap feature simplifies liquidity provision by allowing users to add or remove liquidity with a single token and a single click.
Users can add liquidity with unbalanced token pairs, and Zap automatically rebalances them to a 50/50 split. By eliminating liquidity, Zap allows users to receive only one token in the trading pair, streamlining the process.
Connection to PancakeSwap
If you visit PancakeSwap, you will notice that many features are inaccessible until you connect your wallet. Click on Connect Wallet and you will find some options: MetaMask, Trust Wallet, WalletConnect, Binance Chain Wallet, among others.
If you are not sure how to connect your MetaMask to the BSC network, check out this guide: How to connect MetaMask to BNB Smart Chain.
If you have successfully logged in, you should see your wallet ID in the top right corner.
Add liquidity
If you've used an AMM before, then you'll know what the procedure is like. To farm CAKE, you first have to add liquidity to the exchange.
1. Navigate to Trade, click Liquidity and then Add Liquidity.
2. Select the token pair you want to deposit (for example, BNB and CAKE). Make sure you understand the risks of impermanent loss before adding liquidity to a pool.
3. The platform will automatically select the most popular commission level.
4. Set the price range at which you want to provide liquidity. You will not provide liquidity to trades outside the selected range, so a smaller range tends to be safer.
5. Enter the deposit amount and click Add Liquidity when everything is ready.
6. You will need to confirm some transactions in your wallet to allow the platform to use your tokens and finally add liquidity to the pool.
See the official PancakeSwap docs for more details on adding and removing liquidity.
Farming
You can also staking your LP tokens to earn CAKE or other assets. Navigate to the Farms (Farms) tab and select the option that matches your LP tokens.
You will need to approve the movement of the tokens, which allows the contract to withdraw them on your behalf. When you click Approve contract, a pop-up window will appear asking you to confirm the transaction and displaying a fee.
Once the transaction is confirmed, simply select the amount you want to stake and confirm. You can navigate away from the page and come back at any time to check how much CAKE you earned. If you want to harvest your rewards, click Harvest and confirm the transaction.
Lottery
Another thing you can do with your CAKE is enter the PancakeSwap lottery, which is controlled by a smart contract.
Each lottery ticket costs around $5 in CAKE and will give you a random combination of six-digit numbers (e.g. 9-1-3-9-6-2). To win the jackpot, the numbers on your ticket must match the numbers in the same position as the winning ticket.
What happens if the six numbers don't match? Don't worry. You can also win rewards if one or more of your numbers are in the same position as the numbers on the winning ticket.
Lottery prizes are defined by the amount of CAKE used to purchase tickets plus unclaimed CAKE from previous lottery rounds. There is also a periodic injection of CAKE by the PancakeSwap treasury.
Tokens no fungibles (NFT)
PancakeSwap also features a non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace where you can buy, sell, and collect unique assets on the BNB Smart Chain.
Play Market
Additionally, PancakeSwap offers a Web3 game marketplace, which is a game publishing platform that PancakeSwap provides in collaboration with third-party game developers. For example, the game Pancake Protector was created by the Mobox team.
While the platform is open to game developers looking to publish their creations, games are selected based on certain criteria, such as previous experience, relationship with PancakeSwap items, development roadmap, and support. technical and community.
Is PancakeSwap safe?
PancakeSwap has been audited by CertiK and is one of the leading platforms in the DeFi space. Does that mean it's completely safe? Not necessarily. Depositing funds into a smart contract always carries a risk of bugs, even in the case of audited and reputable projects. There is also a risk of financial loss when trading or providing liquidity. Never deposit more than you can afford to lose.
Conclusions
Ethereum may have fueled the DeFi trend, but initiatives like PancakeSwap suggest that the wave of innovation will continue to spread to other blockchains.
PancakeSwap has become a versatile, community-driven platform, cementing its position as a key player in the decentralized finance landscape.
Whether through AMM, liquidity pools, yield farming, market maker integration, the Zap function or the introduction of Limit orders, PancakeSwap offers a diverse and easy-to-use DeFi experience.
