Chainlink Functions is a web3 serverless development platform that allows connecting decentralized applications or smart contracts to any Web2 API.

Web3 oracle provider Chainlink has launched "Chainlink Functions," a new serverless development platform on its Web3 service platform, enabling developers to build decentralized applications and connect smart contracts to any web2 API.

Requirements for Chainlink functions in Web3 development
Chainlink is one of the leading blockchain oracle providers, allowing dApps across multiple chains to ensure data feeds are valid and secure.
Chainlink connects blockchains and external data sources to enable smart contracts to access and use data safely and reliably. It uses a network of nodes to retrieve data from external sources and transfer it to the blockchain. Additionally, incentivize accurate data through a token-based reward system using native [cs_coins]LINK[/cs_coins] tokens.
However, Chainlink Functions was launched to simplify connecting these off-chain data sources through a serverless web3 service panel similar to AWS Lambda.
Characteristics of Chainlink functions
The newly launched Chainlink Functions aims to provide a “seamless environment and powerful toolkit that enables developers to build, test, simulate and run custom logic for their Web3 applications.”
Excitingly, the platform means that virtually any form of off-chain data API can be integrated into blockchain applications with the same benefits as traditional Chainlink oracle feeds. However, blockchain applications minimize trust through a permissionless and decentralized approach. Therefore, bringing off-chain data into the blockchain can lead to myriad problems in validating the data.
Ciara Nightingale, DevRel engineer at Thirdweb, expressed excitement about the launch, commenting that “Chainlink Functions solves this problem by using the same network of highly secure nodes that power Chainlink Price Feeds,” so the API can be accessed via “just a few lines of code.”
Kemal El Moujahid, Chief Product Officer at Chainlink Labs said,
“With the launch of Chainlink Functions, we are removing a major barrier to Web3 adoption… by combining smart contracts with powerful APIs and Web2 data sources.”
The platform will also support off-chain languages such as Javascript to encourage non-web3 native developers to experiment with blockchain infrastructure. Chainlink Functions is a “self-service solution” that went live in private beta on March 1.
Integration with AWS and Meta
According to a Chainlink announcement, the platform integrates with Amazon AWS, Meta, and more, allowing developers to work within a familiar ecosystem.
Noah Schwartz, general manager of AWS Data Exchange and AWS Marketplace Foundational API, said,
“We’re excited to see how developers can enrich their applications with off-chain third-party data from AWS Data Exchange.”
Additionally, infrastructure providers already integrated into Chainlink Functions, such as Meta, believe the move will support adoption of their own products, said Ankur Prasad, senior director at Meta,
“We’re excited about the potential of Chainlink Functions to connect Meta’s APIs to major blockchains, making it easier for the Web3 developer community to build with Meta and unlock new innovative use cases.”
Benefits of building with Chainlink functions
Chainlink describes the core benefits of Chainlink Functions as having broad connectivity, customizable computation, trust-minimized security, self-service, and serverless.
While Chainlink Functions offers similar functionality to the current Chainlink product, it appears to provide a more streamlined and user-friendly experience for developers looking to connect Web2 data to their dApps.
Ethan Bazarganfard, creator of the NBA's NFT series, commented that Chainlink Functions will "unlock countless new possibilities for dynamic NFTs and inspire developers to create exciting new use cases for this transformative technology."
Web2 developer adoption
Additionally, regarding web3 adoption, the focus on adding Javascript support and integration with Meta and AWS demonstrates a focus on bringing more developers into the web3 space. For web3 to scale, the ecosystem will need a massive increase in the number of developers familiar with blockchain development.
Chainlink Functions will provide tools and services to enable developers to “test the waters” in web3 in a self-service manner through a web-based portal.
Beta versions of Chainlink Functions are now available via private beta on the Ethereum Sepolia and Polygon Mumbai testnets.
