Coinbase launches on-chain validation to enhance application functionality and community engagement.

Coinbase announced a feature on Nov. 9 that allows users to prove their account and country credentials on-chain and gain additional benefits.

Coinbase’s help page indicates that the verifications released are intended to act as “trusted badges” that grant access to on-chain applications and benefits. Coinbase said verifications will initially provide users with a badge for Base’s Guild (a membership program for its second-layer network Base), as well as access to private Discord channels.

Coinbase added that validators will soon provide access to gas-free (i.e. free) transactions, as well as access to other participating applications on the Base network. These upcoming applications include three DeFi platforms: Index Coop, Perennial, and Volmex.

Community data from Dune Analytics shows that Coinbase has issued more than 9,700 attestations to more than 6,200 unique recipients since the end of October.

The rest of the help page provides more details. It states that a validator can be tied to any self-custodial Ethereum (EVM) wallet address, but cannot be transferred to other addresses. A separate section states that a validator can be associated with up to three addresses, including MetaMask and Coinbase wallet addresses.

Coinbase said proving country of residence is optional, but noted it may be necessary to gain access to certain applications. It also assured users that their information would not be published on-chain without their consent.

Coinbase said that to verify an on-chain account, users must have a Coinbase account with no buy, sell, or trading restrictions.

Coinbase added that its ultimate goal is to allow third parties to use the service for verification and expand the ways in which users can verify their identities.
