CoinVoice has recently learned that on November 3, the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced sanctions against Russian national Ekaterina Zhdanova for her role in money laundering on behalf of the Russian elite and using virtual currencies to transfer funds.

“Through key facilitators like Zhdanova, Russian elites, ransomware groups, and other illicit actors have sought to evade U.S. and international sanctions, particularly through the misuse of virtual currencies,” said U.S. Treasury Under Secretary Brian E. Nelson. “OFAC will remain focused on protecting the U.S. and international financial systems from those who seek to exploit this technology and other illicit financial risks in the virtual asset ecosystem.”

As a result of today’s action, all property and interests in property of the individuals designated above, if located in the United States or owned or controlled by a U.S. person, are blocked and must be reported to OFAC. In addition, any entity owned, directly or indirectly, by one or more of the blocked individuals, either individually or in the aggregate, by 50 percent or more, is also blocked, unless authorized by a general or specific license issued by OFAC or is exempt.
