Kristoffer Koch bought 5,000 bitcoins to finish his crypto career, back when the cryptocurrency was worth much less than a cent.

Kristoffer Koch, a young Norwegian student at university at the time, never imagined that a small investment made as part of his university thesis would make him an unexpected millionaire. In 2009, Koch decided to spend $27 to buy a cryptocurrency that was practically unknown at the time: Bitcoin. What began as a simple academic experiment, years later allowed him to achieve an immense fortune.

The origin of the investment: a university project

Koch, who was studying cryptography and computer security in 2009, was working on a thesis about internet encryption. As part of his research, he decided to explore the then-nascent cryptocurrency market. With just over $27, he acquired 5,000 bitcoins, a figure that at the time had no significant value.

To make that decision, he read a paper written by Satoshi Nakamoto, the name by which the mysterious creator of Bitcoin is known in 2008. After finishing his thesis, he completely forgot about his investment and moved on with his life.

Years passed and the cryptocurrency began to gain popularity, while Koch continued with his routine without remembering the bitcoins he had acquired. It was in 2013 when Bitcoin began to appear in the headlines and Koch remembered his forgotten financial experiment. The first thing he did was recover the access credentials to his digital wallet.

Fortunately, he was able to remember the passwords, as there are many cases of people forgetting their passwords and being unable to access thousands and even millions of dollars. Once he managed to get in, he discovered that those 5,000 bitcoins, for which he had paid $27, were now worth about $886,000.

What did he do with all the Bitcoin he had accumulated?

He quickly decided to sell 4,000 of his 5,000 bitcoins. With the profits, he bought a 78-square-meter apartment in the Toyen neighborhood of Oslo, a central area of the Norwegian capital. Despite having given away a large part of his investment, he kept an amount that gradually began to gain more value, as the price of this cryptocurrency continued to grow exponentially. In 2017, it broke the $1,000 barrier, while now, in October 2024, it is positioned at $67,000.

Today, the 4,000 bitcoins he sold in 2013 would be worth more than $268 million — an astronomical figure that Koch said his younger brother keeps jokingly reminding him of. “My younger brother always reminds me of it, but I don’t want to think about it too much,” he said in an interview. Still, he said he doesn’t regret the decisions he made.

Far from abandoning his cryptocurrency investment, the young man continued to profit from his original purchase. Over the years, he has sold small fractions of his remaining bitcoins, thereby earning further multimillion-dollar profits. In a recent transaction, Koch claimed to have made an additional $10 million and still holds cryptocurrency worth an estimated more than $70 million.
