Christian Thompson, chief information security officer at Mysten Labs — a major contributor to the Sui Foundation — described the gaming sector as a “Sandbox” that allows developers to explore a variety of technologies.
At the Future Blockchain Summit in Dubai on October 14, Thompson shared with TinTucBitcoin about the role of gaming in the Web3 space and the company’s upcoming hardware gaming device called “SuiPlay0X1.”

According to Thompson, the game is an “exciting playground” for technologists to explore the Web3 space. The executive emphasized that Web3 is a convergence of many technologies such as artificial intelligence, DeFi (DeFi), and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
Thompson said the game gives Mysten Labs a way to experiment and apply these technologies. “The game is not just a game to us. It’s really the idea of us having a Sandbox to explore every aspect of technology,” he said.
Giving gamers the opportunity to access Web3
On September 3, Mysten Labs announced the SuiPlay0X1, a handheld Web3 gaming hardware device expected to ship in the first half of 2025. The company says it will allow users to play games built on the Sui blockchain and PC games.
When asked about the upcoming device, Mysten Labs' leadership did not reveal many details but emphasized that they aim to allow users to interact with technologies such as AI, DeFi, and NFTs. He explained:
“The SuiPlay0X1, for us, is really the first step of a hardware device for gaming and Web3. It will allow users to interact with all of the technologies I just mentioned and really have that dynamic interaction.”
The operator explained that they wanted to focus on hardware to make it easier for users to interact with Web3 technology.
User experience hinders gamers from adopting Web3
According to a survey by the Web3 Elympics gaming protocol, the complexity of cryptocurrency wallets is one of the top barriers preventing gamers from trying out Web3 games. More than 10% of survey respondents cited complex cryptocurrency wallets as the main reason they have not yet played blockchain-based games.
When asked about getting gamers on board with Web3, Thompson told TinTucBitcoin that the experience of signing up for a wallet and participating in the Web3 gaming system “hasn’t been great.”
However, the operator said that their team has been working to optimize the user experience and shared that they have developed a way to allow users to use their Facebook or Google accounts to get an instant wallet with just one click.
“That user experience is definitely getting better, but we have a lot of work to do there,” Thompson added.
