The competition authorities of the G7 countries have indicated that they will take “strong” enforcement actions to protect competition in the AI sector. In a statement following a two-day summit held in Rome on October 4, they said they want to reduce “competitive bottlenecks” for new AI initiatives. They also stressed that AI should not be used to create monopolies or distort competition.
The group, which consists of the US, the UK, Japan, Canada, France, Germany and Italy, is focused on ensuring that AI is not misused in the areas of copyright, consumer protection, privacy and data protection.
It was noted that AI systems can harm content creators and stifle human creativity. It also emphasized that AI systems should not distort consumer decisions with false or misleading information in order to maintain consumer trust and promote healthy competition.
Monitoring AI developments, creating AI laws and increasing international cooperation were identified as three responsibilities that will help them achieve more positive results.
It was stated that open technical standards will encourage innovation and mitigate concentration of market power. The G7 is an informal bloc of industrialized democracies that meets annually to discuss a wide range of issues.
