Four South Korean citizens face the death penalty. They could face such a sentence amid allegations that they kidnapped and killed a woman who recommended them to invest in cryptocurrencies.
Lee Kyung Woo, Hwang Dae Han and Yeon Ji Ho are accused of kidnapping a 48-year-old victim in the Gangnam area of Seoul. This happened on March 29 of this year. It is alleged that the accused took her life the next day. Prosecutors said Yoo Sang-won and Hwang Eun-hee paid the defendants 70 million Korean won ($51,000). The fact is that the couple purchased cryptocurrencies worth 100 million won ($74 thousand), and then invested another 3 billion won ($2.2 million US) on the recommendations of the woman in October 2020.
Yoo and Hwang reportedly filed claims against her when the bear market began. The fact is that the purchased cryptocurrencies fell sharply in price and the married couple suffered serious losses.
Lee Kyung Woo then allegedly offered to steal the victim's cryptocurrency and then kill her. It is alleged that Lee, Yeon Ji Ho and Hwang Dae Han carried out their plan and later buried the victim 140 km south of the city. Earlier this week, local prosecutors demanded that everyone involved in the murder be given the death penalty.
