Scroll has confirmed the launch of its mainnet on the Ethereum virtual machine (zkEVM), a new competitor in the zero-knowledge space that seeks to scale the blockchain.

The Scroll team announced the launch in a statement on October 17, stating that existing applications and developer toolsets on Ethereum can now migrate to the new scaling solution.

A zkEVM solution like Scroll aims to provide lower transaction costs and higher transaction throughput for decentralized applications running on Ethereum.

It aggregates thousands of transactions off-chain into a single transaction, providing a proof of minimal data digest to the Ethereum mainnet.

Blockchain data suggests hiding the news that Scroll's mainnet has been live since October 8 - which is when the first smart contract was deployed on the Scroll mainnet, according to Etherscan data.

The mainnet launch comes after 15 months of extensive testing and security audits across three separate test networks, Scroll said.

Scroll was founded in 2021, and other zkEVM solutions trying to scale Ethereum include Polygon, zkSync, StarkWare, and Immutable.
