#Brazil's ongoing crackdown on Elon Musk's X is gathering pace, with Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordering the social media platform to be "immediately and completely suspended" unless it complies with all court orders. The Supreme Court judge also warned that individuals or businesses using virtual private networks (VPNs) to access X will be fined R$50,000 ($8,900) per day.
X's conflict in Brazil began in April when Judge de Moraes ordered dozens of X accounts suspended for alleged misinformation, according to a BBC report. X has refused to comply, with Tesla CEO Elon Musk claiming that some of the accounts the Supreme Court judge ordered suspended include current members of Brazil's congress and multiple journalists.
In a post on the X Global Government Affairs account, the social media platform explained that when Judge de Moraes tried to defend his actions in a Brazilian court, he threatened to jail the company’s legal representative. Even after X’s legal representative left the social media platform, her bank account remained frozen.
When we attempted to defend ourselves in court, Judge de Moraes threatened to imprison our legal representative in Brazil. Even after she resigned, he froze all of her bank accounts. Our challenges to his clearly illegal actions were dismissed or ignored. Judge de Moraes' colleagues at the Supreme Court were unwilling or unable to stand up to him," X wrote in his post.
The head of Brazil's telecommunications agency has noted that it is taking steps to comply with the suspension of X in the country, Reuters reports. Judge de Moraes also gave companies like Apple and Google five days to remove X from their Brazilian app stores and block the social media platform from iOS and Android devices.
