A recent case of SIM swapping 📱 targeted prominent user Friend.Tech, resulting in the loss of 22 Ethereum (ETH). The victim, known as @darengb on Twitter, shared her experience, providing information about how the cyberattack unfolded and warning others of the potential risks.
Daren began receiving numerous calls that seemed aimed at distracting him from the realization that his account was under threat. As a result, he missed an important message from his carrier Verizon about suspicious activity. When Daren noticed disturbing changes in his Friend.Tech account, it was already too late.
The attackers emptied Daren's chat on Friend.Tech and took out 34 of his keys. Those who held Daren's key also suffered. Naturally, Daren was upset by the incident and its consequences, especially that it might raise suspicions against him due to the unintended effect of the "hijacker" on his key holders. He addressed the victims, expressing his regret and asking for understanding.
The incident was a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities associated with linking personal data, such as a phone number, to online platforms. Daren's advice to those whose personal information may be publicly available is to remain vigilant, especially if they experience a sudden influx of distracting calls.
The accident comes amid positive momentum for Friend.Tech. It was previously reported that the platform saw significant growth, with revenue amounting to 10,644.8 ETH and total value locked (TVL) reaching 30,165 ETH. This data highlights the growing popularity of the platform and the trust that users have invested in it.
As the crypto industry matures, threats also evolve. Participants need to remain alert to potential risks and implement best practices to ensure the security of their digital assets. 🛡️
