A committee in the Kenyan Parliament was tasked with examining Worldcoin and recommended regulators halt its operations in the country. According to the report published on September 30, Worldcoin continues to collect personal data of Kenyan citizens despite a cease-and-desist order issued in May. The committee recommended that Kenyan authorities disable Worldcoin's virtual platforms and investigate its companies for potential criminal charges.
The report pointed out privacy concerns for Kenyan citizens and recommended that they consider implementing a comprehensive framework for digital assets and virtual asset service providers. He also stated that current regulations should be amended to take into account cybercrime and tax reporting requirements.
Worldcoin was launched as a project that aims to authenticate real people by providing retina scans to distinguish them from online bots. However, it attracted the attention of regulators around the world and was alleged to have bypassed regulations and guidelines on data protection and user privacy. Authorities in Germany, Argentina, France and the United Kingdom have raised concerns about Worldcoin or launched investigations into its activities.
