The blockchain game Axie Infinity, developed by Vietnamese game publisher Sky Mavis, pioneered the "play-to-earn" approach and has attracted millions of players, with some even making a living from the game. However, Axie Infinity later experienced a token price collapse and hacking attacks, leading some in the industry to believe it was nothing more than a scam.
Even so, Sky Mavis co-founder Aleks Larsen said in an interview with "DL News" at the "TOKEN2049" event in September that "Axie" is not over yet. "I think it is 'Axie' that has made this industry possible."
Web3 games are on a mission to compete with Web2 games, with many projects promising graphics and gameplay comparable to the industry's top AAA games. But with the development of web3, Larsen is increasingly worried about games that fail to take full advantage of web3 technology and those games that are advertised as "triple A".
Larsen warned:
"You're basically competing against web2 AAA games without taking advantage of web3 in a really concrete way."
Larsen believes that the AAA game label has become a "marketing gimmick." Instead of proving themselves through their works, those teams focus on indicators such as the NFT floor price or the number of developers hired.
Games like Star Atlas and Illuvium have argued over whether each other's teams are big enough or experienced enough to actually make the games they promise. Larsen sees it differently: too many cooks can burn the soup, especially if they are seconded from another studio, he says: "People in the industry know how difficult it is to work together long-term."
Larsen, who advocates an iterative development approach that advocates responding quickly to user feedback and working in a creative mode, said the initial version of Axie was "very low-quality and very simple." However, the industry is littered with late delivery projects, some of which are Axie Infinity's prime contractors.
Larsen believes that critics are detrimental to the collaborative development of the industry, especially those who have not made concrete contributions to actual projects, and he hopes to cooperate with those who are actually in the market.
