X announced the immediate withdrawal of all staff from Brazil and the cessation of local operations due to threats from Brazilian Supreme Court justice Alexandre de Moraes to arrest its legal representative. The decision came after a legal conflict involving demands for censorship and the handover of private information, which X refused to comply with. Elon Musk, the owner of X (formerly Twitter), described the decision to close the Brazil office as difficult but necessary to maintain integrity. He expressed that complying with what he termed as Moraesโ "illegal" demands would have been shameful.
The legal troubles in Brazil stem from investigations launched by Moraes against X and Musk over allegations of spreading misinformation and potential criminal activities, including obstruction and incitement. Moraes had previously ordered the suspension of multiple accounts suspected of spreading misinformation, particularly those linked to supporters of former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, who attempted to discredit the 2022 presidential election results. Despite the shutdown of its local operations, X clarified that its service would remain accessible to users in Brazil. Musk criticized Moraes, labeling him as a disgrace to the justice system.
