Former Singapore Reserve Bank Governor Tharman Shanmugaratnam won the city-state's presidential election, receiving more than 70% of the vote. Election results announced on September 2 confirmed Shanmugaratnam's victory over Ng Kok Song and Tan Kin Lian. The ceremony will take place on September 14. Shanmugaratnam resigned from his posts in the Singapore Parliament and the Reserve Bank of Singapore to campaign for the presidency. As president, Shanmugaratnam will assume the role of head of state and represent the country in international diplomatic relations.
