MetaMask was created by ConsenSys in 2016
Before 2019, MetaMask was only available as a plugin for Google Chrome and Firefox. Due to MetaMask's popularity among cryptocurrency users and the lack of an official mobile app for several years, malware impersonating MetaMask became a regulatory issue for the Google Chrome Web Store and Google Play platforms. Google Play accidentally deleted the official beta version of MetaMask's app, and decided to restore it a week later on January 1, 2020.
Starting in 2019, MetaMask began releasing mobile applications for closed testing, and then officially released iOS and Android versions to the public in September 2020.
