Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase (COIN) has acquired a minority stake in stablecoin issuer Circle Internet Financial. The two companies also dissolved their Center Consortium partnership, which issued USD Coin (USDC), the world's second-largest stablecoin. As part of this move, Circle will bring USDC issuance and management completely in-house. In addition, six more blockchains will receive native support for USDC pegged to $1, bringing the total number of supported blockchains to 15. In the blog and interview with CoinDesk, Coinbase and Circle did not disclose the size of the stake Coinbase acquired.
