After decades of enmity between the United States and Iran, there are currently no official, direct negotiations. Instead, they rely on intermediaries from Oman and Qatar to pass messages. The priority is to probe temporary solutions for safe navigation through the strait, while temporarily postponing discussions on other nuclear-related issues; the underlying tensions have not changed. The dispute is mired in the nuclear program, sanctions, regional influence, and the energy lifeline of the Strait of Hormuz. So far, both sides only use intermediaries to exchange messages and have not reached any substantive agreement. Deep-seated contradictions and resentment have long been building. There is no winner in war—diplomatic talks are the way forward.
