Demand for cryptocurrencies and AI drives US methane emissions to 6 million tons
The United States is seeing an unprecedented increase in electricity demand and methane emissions, driven by the growing cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence (AI) sectors.
Energy expert Timothy Fox estimates that in 2023 alone, the data centers crucial to powering these industries will consume a staggering 25 to 95 terawatt-hours.
Cryptocurrencies generate 5% of methane emissions
Rising energy consumption is driving annual consumption and peak demand forecasts to their highest levels in more than a decade. This situation raises important environmental concerns. Added to this is the alarming increase in methane emissions, a powerful greenhouse gas.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the volume of methane released into the atmosphere will exceed 120 million metric tons in 2023. This is a figure that the agency considers unacceptably high.
The United States, as the largest domestic emitter of methane from oil and gas operations, is a major contributor.
A comprehensive study published in Nature found that oil and gas operations in six regions, including Texas, California and Colorado, can release approximately 6.2 million tons of methane annually. The study analyzed more than one million aerial measurements of methane emissions.
