Traders placed $1.7 million on 9,200 November 18 20‑strike calls and $1.1 million on 12,500 November 18 23‑strike calls, betting the VIX will close above 23 by the third week of November. Even after Friday’s spike the VIX remains below 20, a level it has exceeded on more than a third of days since 1990, and has closed above 30 on only 8% of days.
