The Government of Venezuela reiterated this Friday to Guyana that it will «not comply with any decision» that comes from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding the territorial dispute it has maintained for a century with the region of Essequibo, following the call that Georgetown made to it in the United Nations General Assembly to comply with the upcoming ruling.

The President of Guyana, Irfaan Ali, used his turn at the UN General Assembly to urge Venezuela to comply with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling next on the dispute over Esequibo—something, he said, must be done in accordance with the obligations imposed by the United Nations Charter. He spoke of a new stage of neighborliness and regional stability.
The response came from the day before: acting President Delcy Rodríguez defended the country’s historical rights over that territory before the same plenary and made the official position clear: the agreements that endure are the ones that come out of bilateral negotiations, not external bodies.
