The wildest thing in AI just happened: Anthropic made $16.3 billion in six months, yet reported a loss of $80.7 billion!
Before you laugh and say it doesn’t know how to run a business, there’s one key detail to understand.
Of that $80.7 billion loss, about $72 billion came from changes in the fair value of convertible financing instruments. These are non-cash accounting losses—they don’t mean the company actually burned through that money.
But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to worry about.
In the first half of this year, Anthropic spent nearly $9 billion on compute and infrastructure, compared with just $2.3 billion in the same period last year. Even more staggering, it has commitments worth hundreds of billions of dollars for compute and cloud services over the coming years.
That’s the real money-burning game in AI:
The stronger the models and the more users they attract, the faster revenue can grow. But compute, chips, data centers, and cloud services are also devouring cash at a furious pace.
So I think the real question Anthropic’s IPO needs to answer isn’t whether its valuation can reach $1.5 trillion or even higher, but this:
Can it turn AI-driven revenue growth into sustainable profits and cash flow?
For investors, surging revenue is only the first half of the story. Whether the company can keep costs under control will determine what the second half is worth.
The AI sector has never been short on grand narratives. What’s scarce is real money that ultimately makes its way into shareholders’ pockets.
