U.S. stocks on August 6: Block fell all the way from 84.20 from the previous day to close at 79.02, down 6.15% in a single day. The intraday low touched 78.50, and the total trading value for the day was $930 million.
On the same day, Cathie Wood’s ARK spent about $21 million to buy Block.
The same candlestick line—two different groups see completely different things. The figure of down 6% by itself carries no emotion; the emotion is added by the person looking. One side thinks it still has to fall further, while the other thinks it has already fallen enough.
Just because “the Wood” bought it doesn’t mean it’s necessarily right—there’s nothing to mythologize here. She’s putting real money on the line, and her judgment could also be wrong.
What’s worth pondering is another thing. Pressing the confirm button on a day when the screen is full of criticism is far harder than simply being right or wrong about a buy. Most people get stuck not because they can’t understand the market—rather, they understand it but can’t bring themselves to act.
