Nigeria’s Crypto Crackdown....😱😱

To combat financial crimes associated with the digital asset industry, Nigeria has escalated its regulatory scrutiny of major cryptocurrency exchanges, including Binance and Coinbase. 

According to a local media report, the African country has asked its telecommunications companies to restrict access to the websites of these crypto firms after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) issued guidelines to regulate the activities of digital asset operators.

The Central Bank of Nigeria had a change of stance in December 2023, instructing banks to disregard the previous ban on crypto transactions imposed in February 2021. 

The latest restriction on crypto websites aims to slow down currency speculation activities within the country. Binance clarified that its platform is not intended for currency pricing after users complained about the inability to purchase dollars.

While no specific timeline is provided for the restriction, the NCC’s directive is expected to take effect immediately. Similar measures were implemented when Nigeria blocked access to Twitter in 2021...

$BTC - Bitcoin Reaches One Billion Transactions..

An Average of 178,475 Daily Transactions..

The Bitcoin network has processed its one billionth transaction — marking a huge milestone moment for the network 15 years after its creation.

Clark Moody’s Bitcoin dashboard shows that transaction 1,000,000,000 had been reached, which was mined into block 842,241 at 9:34 pm UTC on May 5, other data shows.

It comes 15 years, four months and four days after Bitcoin (BTC) pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, mined the network’s first block on Jan. 3, 2009.
It means an average of 178,475 daily transactions have been made on Bitcoin in its 5,603 day existence.

However, the transaction count doesn't include those made on the Lightning Network, a Bitcoin layer 2 network primarily focused on micropayments.

Daily transactions on Bitcoin spiked around the network’s fourth halving event on April 20, including a record high 926,000 transactions processed on April 23.

Despite Bitcoin being the oldest cryptocurrency network, it isn’t the first of its kind to process one billion transactions.
Bitcoin's biggest rival, Ethereum, has processed well over 2 billion transactions since it launched in July 2015, Etherscan data shows.

More than 11 million euros seized and man arrested in investigation into gambling platform scam..

On Monday 29th of April, the FIOD arrested a 26-year-old man who is suspected of fraud, embezzlement and money laundering. The investigation focuses on a large-scale scam surrounding the alleged gambling platform ZKasino. On this gambling platform, more than 30 million US dollars in crypto currency has been invested by victims worldwide. 

In the investigation, a house was searched and digital data carriers were seized. Over 11,4 million euros worth of various assets, including real estate, a luxury car and various crypto currencies were seized. The suspected was brought before a magistrate and his detention was extended by fourteen days for investigative purposes. 

The criminal investigations started on the 25th of April, following reports on platform X (previously twitter) and information from intelligence departments of the FIOD. ZKasino presented itself as a gambling platform and blockchain casino. Investors were led to believe that they would get their investments back within 30 days. That did not happen. The smart contract was set up in such a technical way that suggests that this return was not intended. This could indicate a modus operandi called rug pull (see box text).

During the investigation the FIOD worked closely with staff from the Financial Crime Compliance and Investigations Team of cryptocurrency exchange #Binance , which helped secure millions of euros in cryptocurrencies. 

The FIOD's investigation team, together with the Office of the Public Prosecutor, has been conducting digital financial investigations during the last days. In the process, they managed to get in touch with those involved in this scam. In order to return the millions that were deposited by the victims, it is technically necessary for the people involved in this fraud to cooperate. Therefore, this has been explicitly communicated to them. More arrests are not ruled out.

The collective value of cryptocurrency compromised by hacking plummeted 67% in April to $60.2 million, marking a notable reduction in crypto attacks, representing the first significant decline in 2024.

The 67% is a sharp decline from the $187.6 million hacked in March, which pales compared to the $360.8 million worth of digital assets hacked in February.
