Illinois plans to impose a 0.2% tax on the value of digital asset transactions. The tax would cover not only buying and selling, but potentially also transfers, custody, and stablecoin activity. Uniswap, a16z, and the DeFi Education Fund are calling for DeFi protocols, front-end interfaces, cross-chain bridges, and self-custody withdrawals to be excluded.
Supporters may call this a collective lobbying effort by crypto giants to get a “tax exemption.” Opponents argue that having to pay tax just for moving coins from Wallet A to Wallet B, without making any profit, is no different from “being charged a fee for changing your bank card PIN.” The tax has been delayed until July 2027, but the controversy is far from over.
