🚛 THE COST OF TRANSPORTING EVERYTHING IS RISING — AND THIS CAN REACH THE CONSUMER’S WALLET
The cost of transporting goods in the US has started to put pressure on inflation again. According to The Wall Street Journal, trucking sector expenses are at their highest levels since the impacts of the pandemic, while diesel jumped 77% in a year.
⛽ On September 22, diesel hit US$ 6,53 per gallon, a record according to AAA. The increase doesn’t affect only truckers: railways are applying surcharges, and maritime shipping costs are also high. (The Wall Street Journal)
📦 The problem is spreading through the supply chain. Transport companies either have to absorb part of these costs or pass them on to producers, distributors, and retailers — increasing pressure on the prices of food and other products.
🔥 The result is a particularly delicate scenario: even when oil prices fall back, logistics costs may remain high and keep inflation under pressure.
More expensive diesel → more expensive freight → more expensive products.
So inflation is not only at the gas station. It may be hidden in practically everything that needs to be transported.
THE U.S. TIGHTENS THE NET ON IRAN: BANKING, FLIGHTS AND TRADE UNDER PRESSURE
A Washington-led campaign of economic pressure is making it increasingly difficult for Iran to stay connected with the rest of the world. According to The Wall Street Journal, a senior official from the U.S. Treasury traveled through the Middle East and Europe to warn Tehran’s business partners that maintaining economic ties with Iran could jeopardize their access to the U.S. financial system.
✈️ Aviation is also being affected. Several Iranian companies are facing international restrictions, flight cancellations, and difficulties in obtaining refueling and assistance services at foreign airports. Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Georgia, and Oman have adopted different measures, while China and Russia maintain connections with Iran.
🏦 In the financial sector, Washington is stepping up pressure on foreign banks that have ties to Iran. The U.S. Treasury has also used sanctions against institutions deemed relevant to Iranian financial networks.
⛽ The pressure is spreading to oil. The Wall Street Journal reports that Iranian exports are facing severe restrictions, while the U.S. naval blockade limits Tehran’s ability to transport crude oil out of the Persian Gulf.
🌍 The result is a strategy of economic and logistical isolation that goes far beyond traditional sanctions: it affects banks, airlines, trade, and energy exports. The evolution of this campaign could have consequences not only for Iran, but also for energy markets and international trade routes.
According to a Washington Post investigation, UN negotiations aimed at regulating lethal autonomous weapons were significantly weakened during talks from September in Geneva.
🇺🇸🇷🇺 American and Russian diplomats are said to have helped remove several provisions from the draft, including those requiring that AI systems be predictable and reliable, that ethical considerations be taken into account, and that humans review the targets identified by AI before a strike.
The issue has become particularly sensitive as artificial intelligence is already being used in real military contexts. The debate therefore is no longer just about a futuristic scenario: it now concerns how life-or-death decisions can be made with the help of automated systems.
⚠️ UN negotiations remain non-binding for the moment, but they could pave the way for a future international treaty that is legally binding. New discussions are planned in Geneva in November.
🤖 The central question is now simple: how far can we allow a machine to participate in a military decision before human control becomes indispensable?

🚨 TRUMP REJECTS CEASEFIRE WITH IRAN AND ACCEPTS NEW ATTACKS AFTER THE ELECTIONS
U.S. President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal for a seven-day ceasefire and, according to U.S. officials interviewed by The Wall Street Journal, told advisers that he expects to resume bombings against Iran after November’s legislative elections.
🇮🇷 Tehran’s proposal calls for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, resuming negotiations on the nuclear program, and ending hostilities. In exchange, Washington would have to lift the naval blockade of Iranian ports and ease some economic measures against the country.
🇺🇸 Trump, however, remains skeptical that Iran would accept his demands for a nuclear deal. The scale and intensity of any potential new attacks are still unknown, and officials say the president’s position could change in the coming weeks.
🌍 The standoff keeps the Strait of Hormuz at the center of the crisis. The route is strategic for global energy trade, and any extension of shipping restrictions may continue to pressure oil markets and increase risks for the global economy.
Diplomacy is still in play, but Washington and Tehran remain far from an agreement.
American journalist Evan Gershkovich reveals new details about his 2023 imprisonment in Russia, in an excerpt from his book This Cursed Beautiful Land, published by The Wall Street Journal.
According to the account, Gershkovich was in Yekaterinburg gathering information about Russian military production when he met a source linked to a tank factory. During the meeting, the source put documents with data on production into his hands—despite instructions that no document should be handed over.
Shortly after, masked FSB agents raided the restaurant, handcuffed him, and took him into custody. Gershkovich was ultimately sentenced to 16 years in prison for espionage—a charge that he, the Wall Street Journal, and the U.S. government denied.
In the book, the journalist says he believes his imprisonment was part of a carefully planned operation to convince Vladimir Putin that he was a spy. He also reports that he later found out that the FSB had prepared an alternative plan to arrest him if the Yekaterinburg operation failed. (The Wall Street Journal)
Gershkovich spent nearly 500 days in detention before being released in August 2024, in a major international prisoner swap.
📖 This Cursed Beautiful Land: A Russian-American Story hits bookstores on September 29, 2026, and promises to present not only the imprisonment experience, but also the journalist’s relationship with Russia—its history, culture, and people.
🇦🇷 ARGENTINA: POVERTY RISES AGAIN AND REACHES NEARLY 10 MILLION PEOPLE
Poverty in Argentina reached 32.3% of the population during the first half of 2026, according to official INDEC data. The figure represents an increase of 4.1 percentage points compared with 28.2% recorded in the second half of 2025.
In the 31 urban areas surveyed, around 9.7 million people fell below the poverty line. Extreme poverty also reached a significant level: 7.5% of the population, equivalent to about 2.25 million people.
The data represents a shift from the sharp reduction in poverty seen during 2024 and 2025, and puts the social situation back among Argentina’s main economic challenges.
The evolution of income, the cost of living, and economic activity will be key factors in determining whether this rebound is temporary or signals a new change in trend.

🇺🇸 When America pulls back: the end of an era in the Middle East?
For decades, the United States has played a central role in the security and geopolitics of the Middle East. Now, according to an analysis by The Economist, Washington appears to be stepping away from that role—a shift that could profoundly reshape the balance of power in the region.
Since the Gulf War of 1991, the U.S. has tried to shape the regional order through diplomacy, alliances, and military interventions. But years of conflicts and limited results have increased the questioning of the costs of that strategy.
A possible reduction in American involvement does not necessarily mean the disappearance of the U.S. from the region. However, it could signal the end of an era in which Washington was seen as the main guarantor of regional security.
The space left by the Americans may spur countries such as Iran, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and other regional powers to expand their influence. At the same time, China and Russia may find new strategic opportunities.
The key point is that a change of this magnitude does not affect only the Middle East. It can reshape alliances, energy markets, trade routes, and the global geopolitical balance.
🌍 If the U.S. really is leaving its Middle East hegemony behind, the world may be entering a new phase of great-power competition—one with consequences that are still hard to measure.
