In the futures market, the number of long and short positions is always equal—each long position corresponds to a matching short position, which is determined by matching, not by opinion. So when we say "shorts have the upper hand," it has never meant position count—it means **who is paying**. This distinction is the entire prerequisite to understanding the funding rate.
Funding rate is set periodically to prevent the contract price from deviating too far from the spot price. Most of the time, longs pay shorts because there are more people willing to borrow money to go long. When the direction reverses and shorts start paying longs, it indicates there are too many people shorting at a cost—that’s a negative funding rate.

The IMF calls digital markets “small,” but this part in particular is what I find most interesting.
The IMF puts off-chain (repo) exclusions and stablecoins at around $65 billion as of July, while activity in tokenized repo is around $300–350 billion in daily volume. This is real financial activity, but it remains small compared with traditional markets.
The bigger issue for me is not how fast tokenization is growing.
Rather, whether the infrastructure can handle it when the market comes under stress.
Right now, there are still several major gaps:
• Liquidity is thinner (less depth)
• Markets remain fragmented
• Legal certainty is still evolving
• Interoperability is still a problem
