Solana Foundation’s latest upgrade page shows that Alpenglow will replace the existing TowerBFT consensus. The goal is to compress finality time from about 12.8 seconds to 150 milliseconds. It is still in development and will move into testnet testing.
The interesting part isn’t just “how many times faster.” If finality speed truly materializes, it will directly affect the experience of transactions, payments, and high-frequency on-chain applications. But testnet performance and mainnet launch are two different things. At this stage, it’s more important to watch stability and validator upgrade progress rather than assigning a price tag to the upgrade early.
