Strategy just booked a $20.91B gain on its bitcoin for Q3. Headlines love it: that would rank around seventh among S&P 500 operating profits, ahead of Meta's $19B.
Now look at the full year. Q1 brought a $14.46B loss on digital assets, Q2 another $8.32B. Even after Q3, Strategy is still roughly $1.87B down on its bitcoin in 2026.
The break-even line is about $85,750 per
$BTC by Dec 31. After this morning's slide below $84K, bitcoin is under that line right now.
That's the problem with mark-to-market "profit". Nothing was sold. The same accounting that produced a $21B gain produced $22.8B of losses earlier in the year. It's the bitcoin price passing through the income statement, not a business generating cash.
Other details in the filing:
- Holdings: about 848,000 BTC, worth around $73B.
- New buys: just $28.7M of BTC between Oct 1 and Oct 4, a small amount by Strategy's standards.
- $1.88B in deferred tax expense tied to the Q3 gain.
- Ongoing buybacks of its STRC preferred stock.
The fair counterpoint: Strategy never claimed to be a cash-flow story. It's a leveraged bitcoin vehicle, and in a quarter when BTC rises, this is exactly what it's supposed to look like.
Is a $21B quarter worth celebrating when one bad week can erase the whole year?
