CPI comes out tonight, and crude oil and U.S. Treasuries could move in different directions. 👀
At 8:30 p.m. Beijing time, the U.S. will release its September CPI data. I’ll look at energy prices and core inflation separately: if oil prices are mainly driving up the headline figure while core inflation cools, you can’t judge the market based on just one number.
For U.S. Treasuries, a higher-than-expected reading could fuel expectations of rate hikes, pushing yields up and putting bond prices under pressure; a lower-than-expected reading could ease that pressure. Remember, rising yields usually mean falling bond prices.
For crude oil, we also need to watch supply and demand, as well as geopolitical developments. Hotter-than-expected inflation could also strengthen the dollar and raise concerns about demand, so it shouldn’t automatically be seen as bullish for crude.
I’m still planning to wait for the data to come out, see whether the initial volatility continues, and then decide whether to adjust my trading plan. I won’t add to my position ahead of the results. (Though I’ve already gone short $QQQ 😂 I’ll probably close the position before the data comes out.
