FTX由“币圈神童”山姆·班克曼·弗里德（简称SBF）于2019年创立，为抢占市场，平台推出高杠杆交易、多元衍生品等激进业务，还斥巨资赞助体育赛事、投放超级碗广告，快速跻身全球前三加密货币交易所，2022年初估值达320亿美元。SBF同时掌控交易公司Alameda Research，这两家关联公司成为他后续操作的核心载体。

2022年11月2日，加密货币媒体CoinDesk曝光Alameda的核心资产多是FTX发行的FTT代币，这种“左手倒右手”的模式引发市场恐慌。11月6日，币安创始人赵长鹏宣布清仓所持FTT，直接触发投资者挤兑，单日抛售额达50亿美元。次日FTX提现系统瘫痪，此时SBF才承认FTX长期挪用用户资金补给Alameda。后续币安曾拟收购FTX非美业务，但核查账本后因问题过多放弃收购，彻底击碎市场信心。

2022年11月11日，FTX连同旗下130多家关联公司申请破产保护，用户资金缺口约90亿美元。接管破产事务的负责人核查后发现，FTX内部财务混乱至极，客户资金与公司资金混用，Alameda可随意挪用用户存款，部分资金还被用于购置豪宅、私人飞机及政治捐款，诸多交易无审计痕迹。

SBF很快在巴哈马被捕并引渡至美国，2023年其7项罪名成立，2024年被判处25年监禁并罚没112亿美元，2025年他的上诉因证据确凿大概率败诉。破产团队后续追回145 - 165亿美元资金，2024年推出的重组方案中，小额债权人可拿回本金加最高9%利息（实际回报率达118%），2025年已完成多轮资金发放。该事件导致加密市场市值蒸发超2000亿美元，还迫使行业内其他交易所纷纷公示资产储备以自证清白。
