#Bitcoin2025 for Beginners What is BTC (Bitcoin)? A Beginner's Guide You've probably heard the buzz about "Bitcoin" or "BTC," but what exactly is it? It might sound complicated, but let's break it down into simple terms. What does "BTC" stand for? BTC is the ticker symbol and common abbreviation for Bitcoin. Think of it like how "USD" stands for United States Dollar or "MWK" stands for Malawian Kwacha. So, what is Bitcoin? Bitcoin is a type of digital money. But it's not like the money in your bank account that's managed by a bank. Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency, which means: * It's digital: You can't physically hold Bitcoin like you can a banknote. It exists only on computers and the internet. * It's "crypto": This refers to the strong encryption (complex computer code) used to secure transactions and control the creation of new Bitcoins. This security is what makes it so revolutionary. * It's decentralized: This is a key difference. Unlike traditional money, which is controlled by governments and banks, Bitcoin is not controlled by any single authority. It's managed by a vast network of computers all over the world. How does Bitcoin work (simply)? Imagine a massive, shared digital ledger (a record book) that anyone can see. This ledger is called the blockchain. Every time someone sends Bitcoin to another person, that transaction is recorded on the blockchain. * Transactions are verified: Before a transaction is added to the blockchain, a network of computers (called "miners") verifies it. This process makes it very secure and difficult to fake. * No middlemen: Because transactions are verified by the network, you don't need a bank or other financial institution to approve your payments. You can send Bitcoin directly to anyone, anywhere in the world, as long as they have a Bitcoin address. * Limited supply: There will only ever be 21 million Bitcoins created. This scarcity is one reason why some people believe it has value, similar to how gold is valuable because its supply is limited. What can you do with Bitcoin? (Check out my next post)
