⛏️ Bitcoin is worth ~$81,600, 34% below its record high… and yet miners have never had to compete so fiercely. The network’s computing power is around 1,000 billion billion calculations per second (~1 ZH/s).
📌 The figures (Firsthand Bitcoin, Hashrate Index, CoinWarz, Oct. 22–23, 2026)
• Hashrate: ~1,040 to 1,053 EH/s, +12% in 30 days
• Difficulty: 140.58 T after a +5.92% adjustment on October 16
• Next adjustment around Oct. 29–30: estimated between +3.9% and +6.2%
• Miner revenue (hashprice): ~$36.70 per PH/s per day
🧠 What is “difficulty”?
Every 2,016 blocks (~2 weeks), Bitcoin adjusts the difficulty of its “competition” to maintain a block every 10 minutes. More machines ➜ tougher competition. For a miner, +5% difficulty means about 5% less BTC for the same machine.
👤 Imagine Moussa (a fictional character), who rents a few machines at a small hydro-powered mining site. Falling prices + rising difficulty = his pay is squeezed from both sides. Miners with the cheapest electricity hold on; the rest unplug their machines or sell their BTC.
⚖️ The nuance
• Record hashrate ≠ rising price: it mostly reflects machines bought months ago
• But a more powerful network is more expensive to attack—that’s its security
• Watch for this: if struggling miners sell, it could weigh on prices in the short term
