Harmony’s chain was breached yesterday—an inter-shard receipt replay vulnerability allowed an attacker to fraudulently mint at least 3 billion ONE out of thin air.

Event timeline: Starting at 05:25 UTC on August 12, the attacker exploited a flaw in the cross-shard receipt verification logic to cumulatively mint about 3,010,000,100,000 ONE across four wallets (the first wave of 4 billion ONE was completed via two empty-block credits). At 06:30 UTC, the Harmony team deployed an emergency patch v2026.1.1; the bridge was paused, and exchanges cooperated by freezing the related addresses.

There are two layers of technical root causes: first, the spent markers in cross-shard receipts, before a specific fork, relied only on a MerkleProof field that had not been verified to derive the key—so by modifying these identifiers, an attacker could make an already-processed receipt appear “new.” Second, there was a flaw in the quorum validation during the pre-staking period—an empty-signer bitmap combined with an all-zero BLS aggregated signature was sufficient to pass the threshold check. With the two vulnerabilities stacked together, the attacker was able to tamper with the state root inside zero-gas empty blocks.

1. ONE’s circulating supply was artificially inflated by billions of tokens. Even if the rollback succeeds (the team has prepared a PR), rebuilding market trust in the security of the Harmony chain will take time.
