In the 3rd century during Claudius II’s persecution in Rome, Valentine (a priest) secretly married Christian couples against the emperor’s ban on marriage for young men (to increase army recruits). He was arrested, imprisoned, and while in jail he healed the jailer’s daughter of blindness. He was martyred by beheading on February 14, 269. Before execution he wrote her a note signed “Your Valentine.”

He authenticated her visions, promoted devotion to the Sacred Heart, and suffered greatly for it (imprisonment, exile, illness). He died 1682 at 41, having offered himself completely to the Heart of Jesus.

February 13th, we honour Our Lady of Fatima, the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the three shepherd children in 1917.

In Cova da Iria, Portugal, Mary appeared six times to Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta, calling for daily Rosary, penance, and devotion to her Immaculate Heart. She showed a vision of Hell, promised the triumph of her Heart, and entrusted the three secrets (including the consecration of Russia and reparation for sins). The Miracle of the Sun on October 13 confirmed her message to 70,000 witnesses.

Born c. 480 in Nursia, Italy, Scholastica dedicated her life to God from childhood. She founded a convent near Monte Cassino, close to her brother’s monastery. Tradition holds that once a year they met to discuss spiritual matters; on her last visit, she begged Benedict to stay longer in prayer, but he refused. She prayed for rain, a storm arose, forcing him to remain — she died three days later. Benedict saw her soul ascend as a dove.

St. Josephine Bakhita (1869–1947), kidnapped as a child in Sudan, endured years of brutal slavery before being freed in Italy. She became a Canossian Sister, living in humility and forgiveness, saying: “I can truly say that it was a miracle I did not die, because the Lord destined me for greater things.”

She was imprisoned, tortured (including mutilation of her breasts), and died from her wounds. Legend recounts St. Peter appearing in prison to heal her, and an earthquake protecting her from further abuse. Bread is blessed on her feast in memory of miraculous loaves that appeared in her cell.

Feast (also known as Candlemas)

The fortieth day after Christmas.
Mary and Joseph bring the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem to fulfill the Law: presentation of the firstborn son and the purification of the mother. They offer two turtledoves — the sacrifice of the poor. Simeon, an elderly righteous man waiting for the consolation of Israel, takes the child in his arms and proclaims the Nunc Dimittis: “Lord, now you let your servant go in peace…” He prophesies the child as “a light for revelation to the Gentiles and glory for your people Israel.” Anna the prophetess also recognizes and praises Him.

This feast closes the Christmas cycle and marks the official entry of Christ the Light into the Temple. Candles are blessed and carried in procession — symbol of Christ who is “the light of the world” and the light that dispels darkness.

White vestments. Gloria is sung. The day bridges Christmas joy and the coming Passion.

When light seems dim or hope delayed, remember Simeon’s arms: the long-awaited promise is held, and the light has come.

Saint Brigid of Ireland (also Brigid of Kildare) is commemorated on 1 February.

Feast day: 1 February (Obligatory Memorial in Ireland; Optional Memorial in the universal Roman Calendar).

She is one of Ireland's three patron saints (along with St. Patrick and St. Columba), patroness of Ireland, dairy farmers, midwives, poets, healers, blacksmiths, fugitives, and those in need of protection from fire.

Born c. 451 near Dundalk, Ireland; died c. 525 in Kildare. Daughter of a chieftain and a slave, she was renowned for extraordinary charity, miracles (especially multiplying food and healing), and founded the monastery at Kildare — one of the most important double monasteries (monks and nuns) in early medieval Ireland. She is often depicted with a flame or lamp (symbol of her perpetual fire kept burning at Kildare), a crozier (as abbess-bishop figure in tradition), and a cross woven from rushes.

White vestments. Her feast falls right after Candlemas (2 February), linking light, fire, and purification.

The Apostle of the North.
Born 801 in Amiens, France. Benedictine monk, missionary to Denmark and Sweden in the 9th century. Consecrated first bishop of Hamburg-Bremen (831), with responsibility for evangelizing Scandinavia. Faced Viking raids, destruction of churches, pagan backlash — yet persisted with gentleness, preaching, and building schools.

Converted kings (Björn of Sweden, Horik of Denmark), baptized thousands, established sees. Lost Hamburg to fire and invasion (845), but rebuilt. Died 865 in Bremen. Patron of Scandinavia, Denmark, Sweden, missionaries to pagans, and those facing repeated setbacks.

White vestments. Ordinary Time opens with a saint who sowed in frozen soil and waited decades for harvest.

When mission fields seem barren or hostile, Ansgar teaches: plant anyway, endure, trust the seed.

The father of modern youth ministry.
Born 1815 in Piedmont, Italy, poor peasant family. Ordained 1841. Dedicated his life to street boys, orphans, and poor youth abandoned in industrial Turin. Founded the Salesians (1859) — priests, brothers, and sisters focused on education, vocational training, and preventive pastoral care (“reason, religion, and kindness”).

His “oratory” system: playgrounds, schools, workshops, music, theater — all to keep boys from crime and give them hope in Christ. Dreamed prophetic dreams guiding his work. Patron of youth, apprentices, editors, magicians (he used tricks to attract boys to Mass), and schoolchildren.

White vestments (priest). Ordinary Time brightened by a saint who proved love and joy are the best catechesis.

When youth drift or are neglected, Don Bosco shows: meet them where they are, love them first, teach them second.
