The longer I’ve been involved in crypto, the more I’ve realized that security is not just something a protocol engineers into existence. It’s something people collectively reinforce through years of consistent trust. That perspective has changed how I think about Bitcoin and the role it might still grow into. Babylon made me reflect on that in an unexpected way. What stood out wasn’t the technical design, but the idea that self-custodied Bitcoin can help strengthen the economic security of Proof-of-Stake blockchains while remaining on the Bitcoin network. It quietly separates two concepts I used to treat as one: owning an asset and participating in a broader ecosystem. Perhaps those have always been different forms of commitment. “Trust becomes more powerful when it can be shared without being surrendered.” Self-custody has always felt like the foundation of Bitcoin’s identity because it preserves both ownership and responsibility. If idle BTC can contribute to the resilience of other networks without leaving that foundation behind, then capital efficiency becomes more than an economic idea. It becomes a way of extending confidence while respecting the principles that created it. I don’t know whether this will become the dominant direction for blockchain security.
