According to TheEnergyMag, listed Bitcoin miners and AI data center peers spent $30.7 billion in capital expenditures in the first half of 2026, surpassing the $21.53 billion recorded for all of 2025, an increase of 42.6%. Twelve listed miners accounted for $6.87 billion, already exceeding their combined $6.5 billion for all of 2025. AI-native cloud companies CoreWeave, at $14.12 billion, and Nebius, at $8.13 billion, contributed nearly three-quarters of the total spending by the 15 companies surveyed. Among miners, TeraWulf, at $1.61 billion, Applied Digital, at $1.58 billion, Core Scientific, at $1.18 billion, and Cipher, at $911.5 million, ranked among the largest spenders. Although HPC and AI revenue at nine major miners rose 52% quarter-over-quarter to $205.8 million in Q2, bringing the first-half total to $341.2 million, capital expenditures during the same period were nearly 15 times the revenue generated by these businesses.

According to TheEnergyMag, as listed Bitcoin miners accelerate the reallocation of power and infrastructure toward AI and HPC, the realized hashrate of the miners it tracks fell 13.4% over six months, from 368.3 EH/s in Q4 2025 to 319 EH/s in Q2 2026. Over the same period, Bitcoin’s network-wide quarterly average hashrate declined 10.6%. Excluding Bitdeer, which continued to expand against the trend, the realized hashrate of the remaining miners in the sample fell 21.2%. TheEnergyMag attributed the contraction mainly to weakening mining economics and growing competition between AI and Bitcoin mining for capital and power resources.

According to CoinDesk, citing Hashrate Index data, Bitcoin mining difficulty fell 0.74% in its latest adjustment to 126.23 T, down about 14% from its January 2026 peak and about 19.1% from its all-time high. It also fell below its level a year earlier, marking only the second year-over-year decline in Bitcoin mining difficulty on record. The report attributed the pressure on hashrate growth mainly to weaker BTC prices, declining mining revenue, and miners redirecting capital and power resources toward AI and high-performance computing. The hashrate forward market expects only a modest improvement in revenue per unit of hashrate by year-end.

Glassnode data shows that Bitcoin transaction fees currently account for just 0.69% of miner revenue, remaining close to the 10-year low of 0.52% recorded in April. The share has stayed below 1% for nearly a year, leaving miners increasingly dependent on the block subsidy of 3.125 BTC per block. Checkonchain data shows that Bitcoin’s network-wide hashrate has fallen about 33%, from a peak of 1.3 ZH/s in October 2025 to 861 EH/s. As of Tuesday, the estimated average cost of producing one BTC was $78,254, about 23% above the spot price at the time. (Cointelegraph)

According to Digital Asset, Bitcoin miner holdings fell to approximately 1.1919 million BTC as of August 15, down 885 BTC from a week earlier and reaching their lowest level since May 31. A decline in miner holdings typically indicates that some miners are using their BTC for purposes such as selling, lending, or collateral. During the same period, Blockchain com data showed that Bitcoin’s seven-day moving average network hashrate stood at approximately 895 million TH/s, down about 25.48 million TH/s from a week earlier. The Puell Multiple remained unchanged at 0.75, a range that historically indicates neither clear overheating nor extreme undervaluation.

According to WuBlockchain Data Center, as of August 6, approximately 22.7% of the 22 mainstream BTC mining machine models surveyed were generating negative daily net returns. The most energy-efficient model had an estimated shutdown price of about $46,787, meaning that if BTC falls below this level, even the most efficient machine would approach the shutdown threshold under the current electricity cost and other assumptions. At an electricity price of $0.05/kWh, Bitcoin’s baseline shutdown price was approximately $31,992 as of August 14, while BTC traded at about $63,492, or 1.98 times that level. However, shutdown prices varied significantly across models. The S19 Pro+ Hyd. had a shutdown price of approximately $66,487, already above the current BTC price, while the S19 XP Hyd., S19 XP+ Hyd., and S21 Hyd. had estimated shutdown prices of $50,292, $45,937, and $38,683, respectively. After accounting for mining machine depreciation, the break-even price for some older models exceeded $80,000.

According to Reuters, two Bitcoin mining sites built by Tether in Uruguay have ceased operations after the projects stalled mainly due to a dispute with state-owned utility UTE over the amount of electricity to be supplied. A former Tether contractor estimated that the company invested a combined $120 million in the two sites, but Tether did not respond to the estimate. Documents reviewed by Reuters showed that the parties disagreed over whether the power allocation in the supply contracts represented a guaranteed minimum or a maximum limit, leaving the mining sites without sufficient electricity at one point. Tether’s local entity, Microfin, stopped paying part of its electricity bills in 2025 and requested to terminate the contracts in June. UTE subsequently cut power to the sites on July 25, 2025. Tether had previously viewed Uruguay as the first step in expanding its Bitcoin mining operations across South America, but as mining profitability comes under pressure and energy costs rise, miners are increasingly shifting toward AI and high-performance computing businesses.

According to Bitcoin News, Bitcoin developers have finalized the specification for BIP-54, known as “Consensus Cleanup.” The proposal seeks to address four consensus edge-case risks through a soft fork: time-warp attacks, malicious blocks with high validation costs, a Merkle proof vulnerability involving 64-byte transactions, and duplicate coinbase transactions. It does not introduce any new functionality.

Until then, F2Pool will not signal support for the proposal. BIP-54, also known as “Consensus Cleanup,” is a proposed Bitcoin soft fork designed to address long-standing consensus-layer issues, including time-warp attacks, excessively long block validation times in extreme cases, Merkle tree weaknesses, and duplicate transaction validation. BIP-9 is a mechanism that tracks miner signaling through block version bits to coordinate the lock-in and activation of soft forks.

He said the 55% voluntary activation threshold had become mathematically impossible to reach during the current signaling period and that the results did not represent miner consensus. Saylor further noted that OCEAN had made BIP-110 signaling the default setting for its existing endpoints, while the BIP-110 guide directs node operators to use Bitcoin Knots and miners to use DATUM. He argued that the initiative more closely resembles a vertically integrated marketing campaign for Knots and OCEAN/DATUM.
