I previously assumed that offchain signature aggregation introduced the coordinator as a single point of failure.
Looking closely at the Vault Provider flow in Trustless Bitcoin Vaults (TBV) the mechanics are far more deliberate. During peg in, the provider gathers signatures from every participant and batches them directly onchain. Once published, those signatures remain fully recoverable from Ethereum even if the provider vanishes. That shifts where the true operational dependency lies. The provider still coordinates the signature exchange, constructs the final PegIn witness after the secret is revealed and broadcasts the transaction to Bitcoin. But completed signature collection is no longer locked inside private infrastructure.
However this protection has a strict boundary. Onchain availability cannot recover signatures that were never posted. If setup stalls or times out before publication, the vault expires, forcing the depositor onto the timelocked Pre PegIn refund path. So while publication strips the coordinator of a data monopoly over completed setups, it does not eliminate the coordination dependency during the setup window before L1 publication. Does onchain signature publication remove key provider reliance or just contain it to the setup phase?🤷♀️
